Get access to a client's YouTube channel
YouTube has no API for adding channel users, so the onboarding link does the next best thing: it shows your client the exact YouTube Studio steps with your email and the role you chose, and lets them tell you when they've sent the invitation.
YouTube at a glance
- How access is granted
- Guided. The client invites you in YouTube Studio; no sign-in on the link is needed.
- Roles you can request
- Manager, Editor or Viewer. Owner is never requested.
- What your client needs
- Owner or Manager on the channel.
- Confirmation
- The client taps I've sent the invite; you see Client says invited and accept the email.
What your client does
On the onboarding link you send. No password is ever asked for or shared.
- 1
Opens the link and sees the YouTube step with your email and the role you picked.
- 2
Opens YouTube Studio, clicks Settings, then Permissions.
- 3
Clicks Invite, enters your email, chooses the role and clicks Save.
- 4
Taps I've sent the invite on the link.
What happens on your side
- You get a notification when the client marks the step done, and the link shows Client says invited.
- You accept the invitation from YouTube's email to get access.
YouTube channel roles
| Role | What it allows | On an Agency Pilot link |
|---|---|---|
| Owner | Full control, including deleting the channel and managing permissions. | Never offered |
| Manager | Everything except deleting the channel; can add and remove people. | You can pick it |
| Editor | Edit and upload videos, manage comments and playlists. | Offered — usual for content work |
| Editor (limited) | Like Editor, without seeing revenue data. | Add by hand if needed |
| Viewer | See the channel and its analytics. No changes. | Offered — reporting only |
The YouTube Studio steps
- 1
Sign in to studio.youtube.com with the account that owns the channel.
- 2
Click Settings at the bottom left, then Permissions.
- 3
Click Invite and enter the agency's email address.
- 4
Choose Manager, Editor or Viewer and click Done, then Save.
If Permissions says the channel uses a Brand Account, Studio offers to move permissions into YouTube Studio first. Do that, then invite.
Removing access later
- 1
YouTube Studio → Settings → Permissions → the agency's row → remove, then Save.
YouTube: common questions
- Why isn't YouTube automatic?
- YouTube doesn't let apps add channel users. The guided step keeps it to four clicks and removes the guesswork about which email and which role.
- Can I get access without being an Owner?
- Yes, and you should. Manager or Editor covers agency work without handing over ownership.
