Get access to a client's Google Tag Manager
Tag Manager access is the one agencies forget to ask for until the day they need to install tracking. Put it on the onboarding link: the client signs in with Google and your agency is added to their Tag Manager account with the container permission you chose on every container.
Google Tag Manager at a glance
- How access is granted
- Automatically. Your login is added to the Tag Manager account as a User, with the chosen permission on every container.
- Container permissions
- Read, Edit (default), Approve or Publish.
- Account permission
- User. Administrator is never requested.
- What your client needs
- Administrator on the Tag Manager account.
- Why it matters
- It's the easiest way to install the Agency Pilot tracking script, conversion tags and pixels without touching the site's code.
What your client does
On the onboarding link you send. No password is ever asked for or shared.
- 1
Opens the link and sees the container permission your agency is asking for.
- 2
Clicks Connect and signs in with the Google login that administers Tag Manager.
- 3
Picks the Tag Manager account if the login reaches several.
- 4
Sees Tag Manager marked Connected.
What happens on your side
- Your agency's Google login is added as a user on the account with the permission you picked on every container in it.
- Connected accounts shows Added, or Already had access.
- You can publish the Agency Pilot tracking script as a Custom HTML tag on All Pages straight away.
Tag Manager permissions
Tag Manager has permissions at two levels: the account, and each container inside it.
| Role | What it allows | On an Agency Pilot link |
|---|---|---|
| Account: Administrator | Create containers and manage users on the account. | Never offered |
| Account: User | Can see the account and the containers they've been given. | What your login is added as |
| Container: Publish | Create, approve and publish versions. | You can pick it |
| Container: Approve | Create and approve versions, but not publish. | You can pick it |
| Container: Edit | Create workspaces and edit tags, triggers and variables. Cannot publish. | Offered — the default |
| Container: Read | See the container's tags, triggers and variables. | You can pick it |
Adding a user in Tag Manager
- 1
Open tagmanager.google.com and click Admin.
- 2
In the Account column, click User Management.
- 3
Click the blue plus button, then Add users.
- 4
Enter the agency's email and keep account permission as User.
- 5
Under Container permissions, set each container (Edit or Publish is usual) and click Invite.
Exactly what we ask Google Tag Manager for
A link only requests the permissions the platforms on it need. Nothing here is used for anything other than the reason next to it. More on how we handle access.
| Permission | Why |
|---|---|
| tagmanager.readonly | Lists the client's Tag Manager accounts and containers so the right one can be chosen. |
| tagmanager.manage.users | Only on a link that asks for access: adds your agency's login to the chosen account with the container permission shown to the client. |
Removing access later
- 1
Admin → User Management → select the agency's email → Remove.
- 2
End the connection from Onboarding → Connected accounts at any time.
Google Tag Manager: common questions
- Edit or Publish?
- Edit lets you build and test tags while the client (or their developer) publishes. Publish lets you ship changes yourself. Many agencies start with Edit and move to Publish once trust is there.
- Can I install Agency Pilot's tracking script with Tag Manager?
- Yes. Paste the one-line script into a Custom HTML tag that fires on All Pages and publish. It fills hidden form fields and records visits the same as a hard-coded tag.
- Does the link change any tags?
- No. It only adds a user. Tags, triggers and versions are never read or changed by the connection.
